Clean up on aisle one ...

So ... on Saturday ... when I had many, many better things to do ... I played with my fabric. I didn't sew with it, mind you ... I just played with it. I really should have taken some 'before' pictures, but suffice it to say that it appeared the shelves were throwing up the fabric ... after a very large, very colorful meal.

I took each piece and lovingly stroked it and folded it. I smiled and oohed but mostly made comments like "I have no clue when I bought this" and "I have never seen this piece of fabric before in my life". Which pretty much made Saturday morning ... Christmas.

I had one extra space as things came together so I made a separate pile for my dots. I do love my dots. My dots make me smile.

(You do realize, of course, that what I have in these bookcases represents less than half of The Stash. I split them up over a year ago, and contrary to what either of us thought at the time ... I have pretty much used each half of The Stash equally.)

So ... let me ask you ... when is the last time that you played with your Stash? (fabric, paper, buttons, ribbon, you name it)

And if no one answers yes ... do I need an intervention of some sort?

Hi Mary

I love the way the fabric looks without you even using it! Thank you for all your kind words during a tough time here, you are a wonder!

oh i think i'd rather clean up fabric throw-up than the real kind anyday. as far as cleaning out stashes, i ditched a bunch of clothes from my closet last weekend. does that count? :)

Really important to split the stash and store half in a safe deposit box or mountain vault so that if disaster strikes or someone steals your quilt identity you have a fallback. Besides, even after today's big jump on Wall Street, the stash is still worth twice our 401k.

"Stash" has some weird connotations for me ... but if you mean my collection of scrapbook paper that I have just to look at, well, it's due for a clean-up.

P.S. You passed on your love of dots.

Hi Mary!

I'm not sure if you knew this, but you are one of the two winners of the Fat Quarter Shop Market Giveaway. Please e-mail Jocelyn (a) fatquartershop.com to claim your Moda Aviary bundle, thanks!

I agree with Mrs. Dub's assessment of the term "stash" but feel it is entirely appropriate given the nature of your affection for (addiction to) fabric.

looks great, btw

I need to play with my stash soon. I don't quilt much anymore, but I still enjoy touching and sorting my stash. Yours looks great and all organized!! Fabric has a way of getting all messed up, doesn't it? Sally

Can you BELIEVE that for the SECOND time I won a GiveAway and had to be hunted down!

The conflict of the two emotions ... humiliation and sheer excitement ... are almost too much to handle.

I played with my stash about 3 weeks ago, and got rid of some fabric. Of course, 1 week later I needed the 4 yds of baby blue that I thought I'd never use to make my middle daughter's costume of Wendy from Peter Pan. Luckely, I got more on sale but that still wasn't "free" if it had been in my stash....folding and admiring my stash is like being folded in a warm blanket while being rocked in the arms of a giant (my fantasy).

Actually last night was the last time I played with my stash. It's all in boxes, waiting for me to move into my new sewing room. And yes, it is a powerful addiction, but I prefer to think of it as lovely gifts in waiting. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
